The American Banker article, “Can OCC nominee calm fears of bankers, Senate that she is too extreme?” examined the upcoming, and what promises to be contentious, nomination hearing of Saule Omarova, President Biden’s pick for comptroller of the currency. Omarova, a Cornell University law professor, has sparked backlash and controversy over her academic writings.  Naimon noted,  “We’ve heard plenty of speculation about what Omarova thinks, but the public hearing is a good opportunity for her to speak for herself, and to see how she addresses concerns that are raised.”

Naimon also added that in taking this role Omarova must be able to offer precise solutions to challenges that could fall outside of her academic background. “There's a significant difference between being a professor, where one of your roles is to think big thoughts and launch ideas out into the world, and being an agency head — particularly at a supervisory agency like the OCC — where a lot of the job is providing answers and leadership on narrower, more practical questions.”
