The Inside Mortgage Finance article, “Mortgage companies put on alert for Russian cyberattacks,” discussed the warnings from government agencies and trade associations of possible cyberattacks against the mortgage industry following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. According to the New York State Department of Financial Services Russia’s cyberattacks against Ukraine could spill over to U.S. networks as they have in the past.

McGinn recommended that companies revisit cyber awareness training and education including keeping at least two back-up copies of all files, making sure security patches are up-to-date, and implementing multi-factor authentication. She also acknowledged the risk to borrowers, noting that consumers should be on alert and avoid clicking on unknown websites or responding to unsolicited calls or texts requesting personal information.
