Maryland Attorney General Douglas F. Gansler to Join Buckley Sandler

WASHINGTON, DC (November 18, 2014) – Buckley Sandler LLP is pleased to announce that Douglas F. Gansler, Attorney General of Maryland, will join the firm as Partner in its Washington, DC office upon completion of his second term as Maryland Attorney General in January 2015. Gansler, the former President of the National Association of Attorneys General (NAAG), will help lead the firm’s robust and growing state and federal Government Enforcement Practice and assist firm clients in complying with increasingly rigorous regulatory expectations on Cybersecurity and Privacy. An accomplished trial lawyer and appellate advocate with a unanimous victory before the U.S. Supreme Court, Gansler will also play a major role in the firm’s burgeoning Complex Civil Litigation Practice.

"Doug is well recognized as one of the most accomplished State Attorneys General in the country. As President of NAAG, he took the lead in establishing state policy and enforcement parameters on privacy and data security in the digital age, as well as consumer protection issues of great importance to our financial services clients,” noted Buckley Sandler Chairman and Executive Partner, Andrew L. Sandler. “Doug’s first-hand insight into the current enforcement and regulatory landscape will be invaluable as we assist our clients in navigating the government enforcement challenges they confront on a daily basis. His arrival adds another formidable trial lawyer to our talented enforcement and litigation team.”

“I am very proud of the work my offices and I have done in my eight years as Maryland’s Attorney General and eight years as State’s Attorney for Montgomery County and am grateful for the chance to have served the citizens of Maryland. Joining Buckley Sandler gives me the opportunity to practice law with longtime friends at a firm I have followed with great interest and admiration over the past five years. Since its founding, Buckley Sandler has grown into one of the nation’s preeminent litigation and enforcement law firms,” explained Gansler. “I am very excited about becoming a part of this unique firm and applying my AG and litigation experience to further expand and enhance the firm’s nationally recognized enforcement and litigation practices.”

During his eight-year tenure as Attorney General, Gansler served as President of NAAG and Chair of the Democratic Attorneys General Association (DAGA), where he was an early national leader in focusing attention on privacy and cybersecurity and developed strong relationships with Attorneys General and their staffs across the country. Under his leadership, the Maryland AG’s Office focused on environmental, consumer and public safety issues, prosecuting polluters of the Chesapeake Bay, protecting consumers from various forms of fraud and safeguarding the public from gangs and violent crime, as well as leading state and national efforts to protect online privacy.

Prior to being elected Attorney General, Gansler served as State’s Attorney for Montgomery County, Maryland from 1998 to 2006. From 1992 to 1998, he was an Assistant U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia, where he prosecuted over 1,000 cases involving almost every type of crime, including public corruption; financial fraud; complex money laundering; hate crimes; narcotic trafficking; sex offenses; child abuse; economic crimes; gang-related violence; and homicides.

Gansler received his Juris Doctor from the University of Virginia School of Law (1989) and his B.A. cum laude from Yale University (1985). He was a law clerk to Maryland Court of Appeals Judge John F. McAuliffe.

With more than 150 lawyers in Washington, New York, Chicago, Los Angeles and London, Buckley Sandler provides best-in-class legal counsel to meet the challenges of its clients across the full range of government enforcement actions, complex and class action litigation and transactional, regulatory and public policy issues.
