Andrew L. Sandler and Samuel Buffone Quoted in the National Law Journal's Legal Times Blog Post "Buckley Sandler Inks Record $554M Settlement for Navajo Nation"

Andrew L. Sandler and Samuel Buffone were quoted in Zoe Tillman's Legal Times article "Buckley Sandler Inks Record $554M Settlement for Navajo Nation" on September 29, 2014.

The deal is the largest settlement ever between the federal government and a single tribe, the law firm said. The case was the latest partnership between the Navajo Nation and firm partner Samuel Buffone, who had represented the tribe on other matters since 1999. Buffone said the tribe’s previous lawyers brought him in for some limited work, but that soon changed.

“It became apparent that we had a depth of resources as a larger law firm that we could bring to the case,” Buffone said.

Once Buckley Sandler took over, the firm threw its energy into preparing for trial, at one point dedicating 20 of the firm’s nearly 150 lawyers to the case, according to Andrew Sandler, the firm's chairman and executive partner. The settlement negotiations grew more serious near the end of discovery, he said.

“When they finally came to realize the magnitude of the damages we would be able to prove at trial, they came to the table,” Sandler said.
